When does wood become agarwood?
Not simply by growing old. Aquilaria forms aromatic resin in response to injury and biological stress. In cultivated production, trees are planted and deliberately inoculated; the darkened wood is then graded before distillation.

In the grader's room, a sliver of cultivated Aquilaria is placed on charcoal. The smoke rises slowly and is read like a page: dry wood, shadow and resin. Outside, planted trees wait for the long work of time.
