Is clove a spice or a flower?
Both. A clove is an unopened flower-bud, dried before it blooms. Its eugenol-rich warmth explains why perfumers can move so naturally from clove into the dark, peppered impression of carnation.
This fragrance is also being developed for candles.

Cloves dry on woven mats along the road, raked twice a day, and the town carries their warmth. Above the rooftops stands Gamalama. Spice and flower seem inseparable here—the bud opening in the heat of the island where its story began.
